Moisturizer 101

Hello everyone and welcome to HelloBeauty’s first official post! I was up late last night thinking about the perfect first post and with so many things I could talk about, I started feeling a bit overwhelmed. However, just when I was about to close my laptop and throw in the towel, it came to me: I could talk about moisturizer! Because believe it or not, applying a moisturizer that’s conducive to your skin and foundation is just as important, if not more important than having a good primer. And yes, that goes for those of you with oily skin as well *points finger*

So you may be wondering, what’s so special about moisturizer and why is it so important to involve in my makeup and skincare routine? Well, first let’s start with the basics.

What is moisturizer? Why is it important?

Moisturizer itself is a broad term because it can include everything from water to vaseline HOWEVER for the sake of keeping things simple, we’re going to sum moisturizer up as a generally thin substance you apply to your face in order to maintain moisture. The right moisturizer can help balance out your skin and when your skin is balanced, your face will look that much better – with and without makeup. So, instead of thinking of moisturizer as something needed for dry skin, think of it as a product that helps balance out the levels of oil production within the skin whether the issue is you don’t quite produce enough or you produce too much. If you have oily skin, in particular, remember this: The level of oil appearing on your skin is not an indicator of how moisturized it is. Oil production is an overproduction of sebum and often not enough actual moisture. In addition to giving balance, moisturizer helps to plump, soften and brighten the skin due to these special cells under the skin expanding with moisture. When you find the right moisturizer, you’ll notice your makeup staying on longer and settling onto your skin more seamlessly.

How do I know which moisturizer to pick?

First, you have to examine your skin and take mental notes on what it’s doing throughout the day. Ask yourself: Am I getting particularly dry? Oily? A combination of the two?

Once you figure that out, finding your perfect moisturizer will be loads easier because you’ll know what kind of skin you have. I personally recommend Clinique moisturizers from their Dramatically Different line.

Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizer: $28 USD

I’ll go over the ins and outs of Clinique’s Dramatically Different moisturizers another time. For now, I’ll just say that this line has 3 moisturizers which cover every skin type including normal. All of the moisturizers are lightweight and readily absorbs into the skin so it’s perfect to apply before foundation.

Pro Tip: Pick your foundation based on your moisturizer. If you wear an oil-free moisturizer, pair it with an oil-free foundation. If you have problems with your foundation separating, it might be because your moisturizer isn’t reacting well to your foundation and vice versa.

And there you have it! Of course, there’s a ton more I could say about moisturizer and it’s benefits but I think that’s enough for now, don’t you?

Question: What has been your experience with moisturizer? What’s your favorite brand to use and why?
